Researchers are hopeful stem cells will be able to treat the following 10 diseases. Many of these stem cells will be likely to come from cord blood. The diseases and their incident rates are listed below. Please note most incident rates are listed in terms of the U.S. population since there are few reliable statistics for world wide incident rates.
Cardiac Disease - At least 58.8 million Americans suffer from some form of cardiac disease. Cardiac diseases are the largest cause of death in America.
Stroke - Strokes kill about 160,000 Americans per year. This is the third highest cause of death in the United States.
Diabetes - 20.8 million American children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
Alzheimer’s Disease - An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer's has more than doubled in the past 25 years.
Rheumatoid Arthritis - 3 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Multiple Sclerosis - There are about 2.5 million people worldwide with Multiple Sclerosis.
Lupus - 1.5 million Americans have a form of lupus. 90% of people afflicted with Lupus are women.
Parkinson’s Disease - Approximately 1% of the U.S. population over 65 years old has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The disease is slightly more common in men.
Muscular Dystrophy - The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic and hereditary muscle diseases.
Spinal Cord Injury - 250,000 Americans alive today have some type of spinal cord injury.
