The cord blood collection kit

Once you decide upon a cord blood bank, the bank will provide you with a cord blood collection kit. Though kits may vary, the typical kit will contain the following items.

Directions for you - You'll receive instructions on what to do with your kit and the procedures for returning the kit to the cord blood bank.

Directions for your doctor - Since directions may vary from one bank's kit to another, directions are provided for your doctor.

Styrofoam container - Your cord blood and maternal blood tubes will be shipped in this container. If a mother is donating her placenta, this will also be shipped in this container.

Labels - If your blood collection bags are not already labeled, labels will be included to be placed on the bags. Your cord blood bank will explain how these labels ensure your privacy.

Blood collection bags - These are the bags which will contain your cord blood. There may be multiple bags.

The insertion needle - The insertion needle allows cord blood to flow into the collection bags.

Blood collection tubing - The tubing connects the insertion needle to the blood collection bags.

Umbilical cord preparation kit - Before cord blood is collected, the umbilical cord is prepped for blood extraction with this kit.

Clamps - At different points while collecting cord blood, the umbilical cord and the collection tubing are clamped.

Placenta container - If a mother is donating her placenta, the placenta is placed in this container.

Bio-safety bags - The cord blood and the optional placenta container are placed in bio-safety bags before being placed in the Styrofoam container.

Maternal blood tubes - A mother's blood is collected to assess for any diseases. It is stored in these tubes.

Paper work - Your doctor will have a minimal amount of paperwork to fill out at the end of this procedure.
