In many ways, childbirth is like the movies. Mommy will be the star of the show, but the supporting actor will be equally important. And this movie's supporting actor will be played by dad! Here's a list of ways dad can help out during labor and delivery.
Last minute preparation - There's always a few last minute activities before leaving the home for a couple days. The kids may need to be dropped off at the grandparents or the house will need to be adequately secured.
Remember the hospital bag - You've read the packing for the hospital checklist and packed accordingly. Make sure to bring your hospital bag before heading to the hospital.
Provide the transportation - Dad will likely be transporting mom to the hospital. Be careful - you have some valuable cargo!
Be a calming presence - Mom's body will be going through a lot in the next couple hours, and she'll be full of emotions. Dad is needed to be a calming influence for this scene.
Be the coach - Most dads will be a coach in the delivery room, supporting and guiding mom through the delivery process. Childbirth classes will help dad with this role.
Call friends and family - Dads will be communication central for telling friends and family about mom going into delivery. A followup call will soon inform them you're a new dad!
Your delivery day will not seem like work. This experience will give you one of life's greatest moments - seeing the arrival of your child!
